An expat relocation has two halves that happen at the same time: the physical move and the paperwork. The physical half is the familiar one: a survey, a quote, packing, transport, and at the other end carrying in, assembly and placement. The paperwork half is where expats differ from a family moving across town: a customs declaration for goods from outside the EU, a residence permit from the IND that fixes your arrival date, and a municipality appointment within 5 days of arrival.
A good moving company keeps the two halves in step: if the permit slips a month, the delivery slips a month, and if the rental falls through, the goods go into storage instead of onto the pavement. The Easy Move is based in Eindhoven, which puts Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague within a couple of hours and Antwerp within an hour, and serves the whole of the Netherlands. The routes on our site run across Europe, including the UK and Switzerland, and overseas from the US, India, China and Brazil. In Amsterdam, Utrecht and The Hague the lorry often needs a parking permit for the loading day, issued by the municipality in advance; tell us the street and we check and request it. Household goods from the UK, the US, Switzerland, India, China or Brazil are imported into the European Union, so import duty and VAT apply unless you claim transfer-of-residence relief from Dutch Customs. The conditions are the same for everyone: you lived outside the EU for at least 12 months, you owned and used the goods for at least 6 months, and you import them within 12 months of settling in the Netherlands.
The application goes in before the goods ship, with an itemised inventory. Alcohol, tobacco and new goods are excluded. Goods from overseas usually travel by sea in a 20 or 40 foot container, several weeks port to port, or by air freight in days. Procedures change, so check the current rules with Dutch Customs before you sign off the inventory. A move within the EU involves no customs on household goods. From Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Poland or Romania to the Netherlands it is a road transport with registration at the end: no inventory for customs, no relief to apply for, no border hold. A dedicated vehicle usually delivers within 1 to 3 days inside Western Europe; a shared vehicle, or groupage, runs to the carrier’s timetable, typically 1 to 3 weeks.
The Dutch side is the same for everyone. Register in the BRP at the municipality within 5 days of arrival if you are staying longer than 4 months, which gives you a BSN. Take out Dutch basic health insurance within 4 months; it is backdated to your arrival. An EU driving licence stays valid. If you bring a car, register it with the RDW; a BPM exemption may apply if you owned and used it for at least 6 months, so check with the Belastingdienst.
Many expats arrive before they have a permanent address. The employer puts them in a serviced apartment for 1 or 2 months, or they stay with a colleague, and the furniture has nowhere to go. For that gap we offer secure, climate-controlled storage in our warehouse in the south of the Netherlands: short-term, long-term, student and business. Goods are collected at origin, stored, and delivered to the new address when you have the keys, so the move happens once, not twice.
Two practical notes. If you arrived from outside the EU, the customs relief requires import within 12 months of settling, so do not let the house hunt run past that window. And if you are not sure what fits in a Dutch home, store first and decide later.
A small move covers studios, single rooms, student housing and single items, from a bed and a desk to a piano that needs a specialist. The process is the same as a full relocation, only shorter: you tell us what you have and where it is going, and a small crew does the lifting, the stairs and the van. If the stairwell is too narrow we bring a moving lift with a trained operator. If you are leaving a furnished room, we can also take away the things you do not want: recycled, donated or disposed of.

Yes. The outbound side includes deregistering from the BRP, required when you will be abroad for more than 8 months in a year and possible from 5 days before departure, the end of your Dutch health insurance on deregistration, and the M-form tax return with the Belastingdienst for the year you leave. The lorry side runs in reverse, with customs for the UK and Switzerland.
Often, as part of the employment offer, either as a lump sum or as a move the employer books and pays directly; check your contract. We work for businesses as well as private customers. Tell us at the quote stage who the contract is with and who approves the scope, and we send the quote and the invoice to that party.
For a move within the EU, 2 to 4 weeks is usually enough outside the summer peak. For a move from outside the EU, allow 6 to 12 weeks so the customs relief application, the sea or air freight and the residence permit line up. Earlier is always easier.
