How far is
Germany from Eindhoven, and how long does the move take?

Germany starts about 60 km east of Eindhoven at Venlo. The lorry takes the A67 to Venlo and crosses onto the German A40 towards Duisburg and the Ruhr, or runs the A2 and A76 past Maastricht and Aachen for Cologne and the south.

DestinationDistance from EindhovenTypical driving

Cologneabout 145 kmabout 1.75 hours
Frankfurt am Mainabout 340 kmabout 3.75 hours
Hamburgabout 475 kmabout 5 hours
Berlinabout 650 kmabout 6.5 hours
Munichabout 725 kmabout 7.5 hours

Distances are route-planner figures from the centre of Eindhoven. NOBL Relocation, a Delft mover, delivers western Germany within 1 to 2 days and adds a day for Berlin and Munich; groupage, where your goods share a lorry, runs to the carrier’s schedule. If the keys come later than the lorry, your goods wait in our climate-controlled storage in the south of the Netherlands until the flat is yours.

Is there customs
between the Netherlands and Germany?

Customs does not apply to household goods moving from the Netherlands to Germany. Both countries are in the EU and in the Schengen area, so no declaration is lodged, no duty or VAT is charged on your used furniture and nobody checks an inventory at Venlo. The lorry drives through, the same as it would from Eindhoven to Groningen.

The inventory still earns its place: your transport insurance is settled against it if something breaks, and it is the list the crew ticks off at unloading. On a move to Switzerland, by contrast, the customs form and the inventory add weeks of planning. On a move to Germany, that planning goes into the Bürgeramt appointment and the parking permit instead.

How do you register in Germany after you arrive?

The Anmeldung is the registration of your address at the Bürgeramt or Einwohnermeldeamt of your new town, and the Bundesmeldegesetz gives you 14 days from moving in to do it. The Berlin service portal spells out the documents: a valid passport or ID card and the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, a signed confirmation from your landlord with the move-in date and the address. A rental contract does not replace it, and registration is free.

The Anmeldung sets everything else in motion. Employers, banks and insurers ask for the Anmeldebestätigung, and the ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice writes to you about the Rundfunkbeitrag. Verbraucherzentrale explains that the fee is paid once per flat by one adult, whatever devices you own, at 18.36 euros a month at the time of writing; check the current rules with the Beitragsservice. Book the Bürgeramt slot before the lorry arrives.

How do health insurance, your car and your licence work in Germany?

Health insurance is compulsory for every resident of Germany, states Make it in Germany, the Federal Government’s portal for skilled workers. Most employees join a statutory fund (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) through their employer; above a salary threshold you can choose private cover. Arrange the fund in your first days, because your Dutch basic insurance ends on BRP deregistration.

Your car goes onto German plates once you are resident. The Europäisches Verbraucherzentrum Deutschland lists what the Kfz-Zulassungsstelle asks for on an EU car: the Dutch registration papers, an electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) from a German insurer, a valid Hauptuntersuchung for a car older than three years and the COC paper. No federal page states a deadline, and Your Europe warns of fines for driving on a foreign plate, so check the current rules with the Kfz-Zulassungsstelle in your district.

Your Dutch driving licence stays valid. The Federal Government’s service portal says an EU licence is generally valid in Germany and only needs exchanging when it comes up for renewal.

How do you get parking for the removal lorry in a German city?

A Halteverbotszone is a temporary no-stopping zone in front of your building, marked by two official signs, and in a German city centre it decides whether the lorry parks at the door or 80 metres away. The City of Cologne asks for a written application at least three weeks before the moving date and wants the signs standing 96 hours ahead, at 36 euros for the first day. Stuttgart asks for the application two weeks ahead and the signs three full calendar days before, at 30 to 100 euros. Fees change, so check the current rules with your city’s Ordnungsamt.

If the flat sits on the fourth floor of an Altbau with a narrow stairwell and no lift, a moving lift with a trained operator takes the wardrobes through the window from the street, a second reason to reserve the kerb.

What do you close in the Netherlands before you leave?

Deregistration from the BRP at your Dutch municipality comes first: Government.nl says you must deregister when you will live abroad for more than 8 months within a year, in person, 5 days or fewer before departure and not earlier. Ask for written proof of deregistration; Duitsland Buitenland says you need it in Germany. Your Dutch basic health insurance ends on deregistration, so the German Krankenkasse should follow without a gap. The year after, the Belastingdienst expects a return for the year of emigration, online or on the paper form M.

Then the loose ends: notice on your lease, energy, water, internet and post. Keep your DigiD, because the online M return runs through Mijn Belastingdienst. Our international moving checklist lists the Dutch steps month by month.

What does moving to Germany from the Netherlands cost?

The cost of moving to Germany from the Netherlands depends on volume, access at both addresses, the packing you book, storage and the season, and only then on the distance. The Dutch comparison platform Sirelo (2026) lists a full household from the Netherlands to Germany at 2,700 to 3,800 euros; Verhuisoffertes.com lists 1,500 to 4,000 euros. These are indications, not our prices.

Verhuizenkunjezelf.nl describes the usual split of a moving bill as roughly 40% transport, 25% loading, 25% unloading and 10% extras. In Germany the extras are the Halteverbotszone permit, the signs and a moving lift. Sirelo lists storage at 75 to 140 euros a month and car transport inside Europe at 500 to 1,500 euros. Our guide to moving costs from the Netherlands to Germany sets out each factor; The Easy Move quotes a fixed price after a consultation, with no hidden fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can you just move to Germany?

Yes, as a Dutch or other EU citizen you need no visa, work permit or residence permit for Germany. The obligations start after arrival: the Anmeldung within 14 days under the Bundesmeldegesetz, a German health fund and, if you bring a car, the Kfz-Zulassungsstelle. Non-EU nationals need a German residence title first; check the current rules with the German embassy.

What is a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung?

A Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is the written confirmation from your landlord, or from the owner if you buy, that you have moved into the flat. The Berlin service portal lists its contents: the landlord’s name and address, the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of everyone moving in. Without it the Bürgeramt will not register you; a rental contract is not accepted instead.

How long does a move to Germany take?

A dedicated vehicle delivers western Germany in a day: loading in the Netherlands in the morning and unloading in Düsseldorf or Cologne the same afternoon. NOBL Relocation quotes 1 to 2 days for western Germany and an extra day for Berlin and Munich. Groupage runs to the carrier’s schedule, typically one to three weeks. From survey to keys, count two to four weeks.

Do I need customs documents for my household goods?

No. The Netherlands and Germany are both EU members, so used household goods cross the border without a customs declaration, duty or VAT. You still want an itemised inventory for the transport insurance and a photograph of any valuable piece before packing. The exception is anything shipped onward to Switzerland or the UK, where those countries’ customs forms apply.

Je auto meenemen naar Duitsland?

Yes, and a used car from another EU country pays no duty or VAT. Once you are resident it must be registered at the Kfz-Zulassungsstelle with the Dutch papers, a German eVB insurance confirmation, a valid inspection and ideally the COC paper, the Europäisches Verbraucherzentrum says. The Dutch registration closes on the RDW side once the car is exported, so check the current rules with the RDW first.
